Pull Up and Speak
Pull Up and Speak is a spoken word and poetry night hosted at Manchester's Pull Up Bar - each month a roster of local wordsmiths take to the stage to perform their work to a packed out venue.
The client expressed a desire for something tactile and warm in feeling and referenced Cubism as a style of artwork that they would like to be featured. To form the logo I used a traditional cubist technique by slicing the letterforms along two lines and then shifting the parts to create an abstraction of the letters which is, crucially, still legible but introduces an element of play into the design - this communicates the way in which poetry plays with words and creates an abstraction of reality.
I used some texturing techniques to distress and warp the designs - adding a letterpress style to the typography which gives the effect of worn and smudged ink and then adding cloth like texture to the paper which creates a suggestion of physicality. I believe this makes it more effective in forming a connection with the viewer as it becomes what may have been an analogue piece but presented in a digital setting.
